Signs the main sewer line is blocked
One slow sink is a branch drain problem. A main line problem shows up everywhere at once. The lowest drain in the house usually complains first, which is why basement floor drains and shower pans are the early warning.
Watch for the pattern rather than a single symptom. Several of these together point to the line between the house and the street.
Gurgling toilets
A toilet that bubbles when the washer drains is pushing air through a line that cannot move water.
Backup in the lowest fixture
Sewage or gray water rising in a basement floor drain or tub while upstairs fixtures still drain slowly.
Sewer gas smell
A sewage odor near drains or in the basement can mean standing waste in the line, not only a dry trap.
Multiple fixtures slow
Toilets, tubs and the laundry standpipe all draining sluggishly on the same day.
Before we arrive: what to do while sewage is backing up
These steps limit the mess and keep the line accessible. They are safe for any homeowner.
Stop all water use
Do not flush, run the dishwasher or start a laundry load. Every gallon you add has nowhere to go but the lowest drain.
Find the cleanout
Look for a capped pipe, usually near the foundation wall in the basement or just outside. Clear a path to it so the cable can go straight in.
Protect people and pets
Keep children and animals away from standing sewage. Wear gloves and boots if you must walk through it, and never mix cleaning chemicals.
Document and move belongings
Photograph the backup for your records, then lift boxes and electronics off the floor. Leave the cleanup until the line is open.
How the main line gets cleared
- 1
Locate access
We find the main cleanout, or pull a toilet or open a vent stack if the house has no accessible cleanout.
- 2
Cable the line
A powered cable with the right cutting head runs toward the street, breaking through grease, paper, roots or scale.
- 3
Test the flow
Water is run through the whole house to confirm the line drains at full speed, not just a thin channel.
- 4
Camera and recommendation
If the blockage came back before or the cable hit something solid, a camera shows the cause. Roots or a break may point toward sewer line repair.
Cabling opens a pipe, and it does not scrub it. Where a line is lined with grease or heavy scale, a follow-up with hydro jetting cuts the pipe wall clean, and we will say so plainly rather than selling it by default.

What Ridgewood's own sewer rules mean for your line
The Village of Ridgewood runs its own Water Pollution Control Facility, so the public sewer your lateral connects to is a local system, not a distant utility. Your responsibility starts at the house and runs to the connection.
Village code, Chapter 238, says house sewers must be cast iron or vitrified clay beyond three feet from the building. Both materials are durable, and both have joints. Joints are where roots find their way in, which is why an older Ridgewood lateral can clog repeatedly in the same spot.
The code also makes connections to the sewer a job for a licensed plumber, and New Jersey requires plumbing work to be done by a licensed master plumber. If a cable hits a joint offset, a lined section or a break, that is the moment to stop cabling and look with a camera.
Cabling versus a camera and a repair
A cabling visit usually fits when
- The backup is sudden and the line drained fine last month
- Grease, paper or a wad of wipes is the likely cause
- The cleanout is accessible and the cable runs freely
A camera look usually fits when
- The same drain backs up every few months
- The cable stops short or comes back with roots or clay
- You are buying, selling or about to dig near the line
If only one fixture is slow, a smaller job like drain cleaning may be all that is needed. The point of the first call is to sort which one you have. For neighbors in Wyckoff, the same approach applies, and the Wyckoff service page lists the nearby coverage.
What affects the cost of sewer line cleaning
The price depends on the job in front of the plumber, not a flat menu. You get a clear price before work starts.
Ask for the price and what it includes before you say yes. That is standard here.

Sewer cleaning questions, answered
If several fixtures are slow or backing up at once, especially the lowest drain in the house, the main line is the likely cause. A single slow sink is usually a branch drain.
No. Once the main line is blocked, every flush adds waste that can come up in a basement drain. Stop water use until the line is cleared.
Most often it is a threaded cap on a pipe near the foundation wall inside the basement, or in the yard near the house. If you cannot find it, tell the dispatcher what the basement looks like and we will work from there.
A properly sized cable and cutting head clears the obstruction without harming sound pipe. A cracked or offset line can catch the cable, which is exactly why we camera those lines.
It depends on the cause. A one-time wad of paper may never return, while roots and grease come back unless the pipe is lined, repaired or jetted.
Yes. We serve Ridgewood, Glen Rock and the surrounding Bergen County towns. Call and give the address.
If the backup is inside your house, start with a plumber to find out whether the blockage is on your side of the connection. If the camera shows the problem is in the public main, the Village is who to contact.
